1793 Sir John sailed from Plymouth with Lord McCartney to Britain’s First Embassy in China  
1796 Sir John last saw his native Ulverston  
1797 Sir John journeyed to South Africa  
1804 Sir John was appointed Second Secretary to the Admiralty (till 1845)
1830 Sir John was founder member of the Royal Geographical Society  
1835 Sir John became a baronet  
1845 Sir John retired  
1846 Sir John promoted expeditions to the Arctic  
1848 Sir John died in London on 23rd November aged 84
1850 Trinity House give their approval to the Monument 20th February
1850 Foundation Stone laid for the monument on Hoad Hill on 15th May  
1850 Monument construction intended finishing date 13th November  
1851 Monument building completed on 9th January  
1851 Monument unveiling on 16th January  
 1851 Monument was struck by lightening on 30th January  
1851 Monument given to town by subscribers’ committee  
1851 Monument damaged through vandalism to stonework  
1853 Substantial re-pointing to Monument required  
1855 Tablet with a list of subscribers added inside Monument  
1864 Cottage and Garden at Dragley Beck presented it to his son, John Barrow  
1873 Complaints that the Monument access paths were not being kept in order  
1895 On 14th September 1895, John Barrow (Sir John's son) offered the Cottage and land to the Ulverston Urban District Council  
1900 50 Year Celebrations of the building of the Monument - Damage from Jubilee fire  
1909 Monument required repairs against damp including rendering of entire outer surface  
1950 100 Year Celebrations of the building of the Monument
1969 Monument encased in reinforced cement  
1978/79 The Cottage was completely renovated and the roof was reslated with Burlington Slate  
1990 to 2000 New electric spot lights added to illuminate external Monument
2000 150 Year Celebrations of the building of the Monument
2001 Severe damp ingress due to Monument closure during Foot & Mouth Disease epidemic
2004 Monument closed to the public until problems resolved - for safety reasons
2005 Heritage Lottery Funding provided to support Phase 1 investigative work.
2006 Phase 1 investigative work completed.
